About Cassandra
Hi, I’m Cassandra I recently relocated to Buffalo, NY for a full-time position with the University at Buffalo Art Department as their Photo Area Instructional Support Technician. I formerly was an Adjunct Studio Arts Professor for the Department of Art & Design at Indiana State University as well as Arts Illiana’s Gallery Director located in Terre Haute, IN.
I received my Master's in Fine Arts and Visual Studies at Minneapolis College of Art and Design in Minneapolis, MN with a focus in Photography and Video Installation documenting mundane moments through travel across The Midwest.
In the Spring of 2016, I received my Bachelor's in Fine Arts with a concentration in Photography and Painting at Indiana State University. During my time at I.S.U., my work began to shift after studying abroad in Florence, Italy at the Florence School of the Arts (FUA). After taking sketch booking classes I became interested in documenting the small everyday moments of life.
In my work, I do a lot of experimenting and exploring with materials such as fabric. I became fascinated when I first learned how to use liquid emulsion in the darkroom. I began applying it to surfaces such as fabric ranging from silk, cotton, and canvas. Applying it to these kinds of surfaces allowed me to create a relationship between photography and painting. Without the use of a Darkroom, my material application switched to printing digitally onto fabric.
With this transition, I began to notice how layers play a role in my work. Whether it is through Photoshop to printing onto fabric and overlaying translucent materials or through double exposures through film. I started to break down the experience I was having at the moment the photos were taken. This has led me to expand past photography and painting and incorporate video installations in my work.
